Vägar för framtiden – lifecycle-based, climate-smart road maintenance

Vägar för framtiden (Roads for the Future) is an ongoing research project funded by Mistra InfraMaint and carried out together with Nacka municipality.

The project develops lifecycle-based decision support for municipal road maintenance: predictive condition models for the whole road network, emissions data from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) built into maintenance planning, and life cycle assessment and costing at network level. With the municipality, the results become practical procurement recommendations that reduce the climate impact of road maintenance.

The work takes a systems view. Alongside emissions per ton of material, it looks at service life, total emissions across the network and the effects of today's choices over decades.
