Digital twin prototype – a systems view of road maintenance emissions

An interactive digital twin prototype of Nacka municipality's road network, developed as an academic case study in the SPID course at Mälardalen University (Sustainable Production powered by Industrial Digitalisation, an advanced programme for professionals in the manufacturing industry) and as part of Vägar för framtiden.

The prototype maps around 2,000 road segments by condition and planned maintenance, with a live emissions calculator behind each segment. Two indicators make system effects visible:

• Paradox Flag – shows per-ton and total emissions side by side, and flags when a cleaner mix applied to a larger area still raises total emissions (the Jevons paradox).
• LOM Horizon – projects network degradation over 30, 50, 100 and 175 years to show how today's material choices shape the long term. Marked as speculative beyond about ten years.

Every figure in the tool rests on a cited source or a stated, adjustable assumption.
